China targets rare earth export curbs to hobble US defense industry | ARS TECHNICA

With about 80 percent control over 17 rare earth minerals supply, China is exploring the possibility of limiting the export of such minerals, which are very important in creating sophisticated weaponry and fighter jets, including the American F-35. If this happens, the U.S. and other countries will need to find alternatives to keep up with the production of different items such as fighter jets that greatly rely on rare earth in their important components such as electrical power systems magnets. The move is seen as a way of getting back with the U.S. after the Trump administration made it harder for Chinese companies to import sensitive US technology.
