This was the secret war off the US coast during World War II | We Are the Mighty

On January 19, 1942, a German U-boat attacked a 337-foot-long U.S. freighter in the City of Atlanta with 47 men aboard, of which only three were able to survive. A few hours later, the same U-boat attacked two more ships, making it a secret war off the US coast during World War II. The event wasn’t the first time that German U-boats had come to United States waters as three U-boats sank ten ships off the Tar Heel coast during World War I. U-boats are not true submarines or underwater boats but are warships that spent most of their time on the surface.
