For the first time in history, a black female, in the person of Retired Air Force Colonel Merryl Tengesdal, was able to maneuver the U-2 plane. Aside from being the very first-ever Black female U-2 pilot, she was also able to set the record as the only black female to be able to do so. Tengesdal was raised by her single mother in the Bronx. Becoming a pilot wasn’t one of her dreams as a child, and sent to the Navy instead. After that, she became a T-6 instructor then joined the Air Force, where she made history. Out of 1100 women pilots in the world, Tengesdal was only one of ten women and the only black human to fly the U-2 plane.
