Thirty years ago, on Jan. 31, 1991, AC-130H Spectre gunship was shot down by an Iraqi surface-to-air missile during the battle of Khafji. The AC-130, also known as Spirit 03, is one of the deadliest air crafts in the Air Force. When it was shot down, all 14 airmen on board were killed, making history as the largest single loss of life for the Air Force in Operation Desert Storm. The incident became an awakening call for the Air Force to reinvent the AC-130 for a new challenge and a new century, making it untouchable in the last 30 years.
