FN-49: The last old-school battle rifle | American Rifleman

Fabrique Nationale began producing the Model 1889 Mausers for Belgium in 1891. They soon expanded and created new Models for Brazil, Costa Rica, and several other countries. In 1936 Dieudonne Saive, FN’s chief firearms designer, developed and patented a new gas-operated rifle that had the basic characteristics later used in the FN-49. The prototypes were completed in early 1944 and were sometimes referred to as SLEM (Self-Loading Experimental Model).
