Storied Marine infantry regiment deactivated as Corps carries on with force redesign | Marine Corps Times

Must Read

Originally founded on Oct. 9, 1917, in Quantico, Virginia, U.S. Marine Corps’ 8th Marine Regiment has been deactivated as the Corps moves forward with force design changes. Specifically, the move was under the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030, which was released in early 2020 by Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger. The force design plan includes a total force reduction of 12,000 Marines by 2030. It also includes the  “divestment” of three infantry battalions and one regimental headquarters and all tank battalions’ axing. These efforts are meant to make more money for new investments, including light armored reconnaissance and long-range missiles.
