U.S. Army Staff Sgt. James F. Moriarty’s family accepted a posthumous Silver Star medal for him on his birthday. Moriarty was killed in action in 2016 in Jordan while trying to enter a military base. U.S. Special Operations Command commented that Moriarty was “directly responsible for the survival of another Green Beret” during the attack and gave his fellow soldier the opportunity to take down the shooter. The award was presented in Houston at North Lakeside Pavilion in the Clay Family Eastern Glades Memorial Park. Moriarty is a native Houstonian who graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with an economics degree in 2011 and attended the Special Forces Assessment and Selection in May 2012.
