Troop levels are down, but US says over 18,000 contractors remain in Afghanistan | Stars & Stripes

After several repatriation efforts, the number of contractors in Afghanistan went down by around 20%, but 18,000 individuals remain in the country based on the Defense Department Report. Some of the stranded contractors were stuck in the country for months without pay after their companies closed due to the pandemic. Troop numbers have also been dwindling, with 2,500 currently in Afghanistan.
