US-backed Iraqi security forces organized a full-scale attack to liberate Mosul from the hold of the Islamic State from October 16, 2016 to January 4, 2017. It became one of the most destructive urban fights in modern history involving Western forces. Over ten thousand civilians were killed and billions of dollars of damage to the city was created. These kinds of missions will continue if the limitations characterizing the conduct of urban warfare is not changed.
