South African COVID variant appears to ‘obviate’ antibody drugs, Dr. Scott Gottlieb says | CNBC

Dr. Scott Gottlieb warned about a new South African COVID variant known as 501.V2 that appears to inhibit antibody drugs. Projections for the distribution of vaccines are falling short. More than 17 million COVID vaccine doses have been distributed to states, but only 4.8 million Americans have received their first shot according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Scott Gottlieb emphasizes the critical need in vaccinating more people especially as the new South Africa variant appears to partially escape prior immunity.
