US Air Force/Capt. Billie D Tedford

The Military Assistance Command Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group was made up of Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Air Commandos. During Christmas time 1968 the Recon Team ST Idaho’s mission was to destroy a fuel pipeline inside Laos. A 22-year-old John Stryker “Tilt” Meyer led two other Green Berets and three local personnel. They landed their H-34 Kingbee helicopter near the mountains and had to travel through 10-foot-tall elephant grass. They were soon under attack by the North Vietnamese Army who lit the grass on fire. Meyer led his team to fight despite the fire before receiving support from another SOG team.
