In 2017, the Great Mosque of al-Nuri in Mosul was destroyed during a battle between government forces and IS. A $50.44M project was financed by UAE and was initiated by UNESCO known as Revive the Spirit of Mosul to restore the city. The mosque represents the city’s rich diversity of culture, art, literature, and place of worship. However, upon assessment of the damage using drones, a large arsenal of mines and unexploded devices littered the area and the remains of the 850-year-old building is a long and challenging project.
