Watchstanders noticed a personal locater beacon was activated and three sailors were in distress aboard the Esmerelda. It was then discovered that the three Canadian boaters were sailing a vessel 140 nautical miles off the coast of Bermuda. The Coast Guard swiftly jumped into action and alerted other vessels around them of possible danger. A nearby vessel also helped the Coast Guard in transferring the three boaters off the ship in adverse weather.
