97-year-old Silver Star Iwo Jima veteran to be oldest Marine participant in Marine Corps Marathon | Marine Corps Times
- Fred Harvey is a veteran who fought as a World War II Paramarine during the battle of Iwa Jima. He earned the Silver Star and is expected to become the oldest Marine to participate in the annual Marine Corps Marathon. “I haven’t competed in a marathon before, but I’ve never been afraid of a challenge,” Harvey said in a press release. Harvey plans to cross the finish line in a wheelchair four days shy of his 97th birthday.
