Before the AC-130, the Air Force had another fearsome gunship | Business Insider

Even before AC-130 became the Air Force’s gunship of the decades, the C-47 fulfilled several roles in World War II and Korea for dropping paratroopers, and tow for gliders. The last AC-47 variant consisted of the cargo plane with three 7.62 mm miniguns mounted on the left side. The AC-47, dubbed “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” by an officer lead to Project Gunship II of which resulted in AC-130 still in service today.
