Former Pinckney commander reinvents himself, opens restaurant following tragedy | Navy Times

Bob Byron is a Naval Academy graduate and retired Navy captain who once commanded the guided-missile destroyer Pinckney. His Navy career effectively ended when he was relieved of command in June 2004. With his GI benefits expiring, he decided to attend a brew school. It was not a smooth sailing transition for him but with the right people, he was able to succeed. He now owns a brewery-distillery hybrid in Asheville with a menu of elevated pub food called Rye Knot. “I could never had imagined myself as the captain of this ship, I’ll tell you that,” he said.
