While fighting for his country, Gunnery Sgt. Charles Shaw also delt with being segregated. He lived in spare huts and needed to be escorted on base by a white Marine. Other black Marines have been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, and now finally Matthew’s father is being recognized as well. The Congressional Gold Medal is the nation’s highest civilian award and his will be displayed on Veterans Day at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.
