‘Lead from the front’: Vietnam combat veteran shares lessons in leadership | ABC 27

When retired Army Colonel Tony Nadal was appointed as a company commander, he believes that leaders need to earn the trust and respect of its soldiers by leading from the front. During a battle against North Vietnamese troops, Nadal put himself at risk during a firefight to recover the body of a lieutenant who had been killed in a creek bed. “I had said that we won’t leave anyone behind,” he commented. When he returned to the US, Nadal also worked to modernize an antiquated system of leadership in the Army called Plebes.
