Aside from the UNESCO heritage Convent of Christ in Portugal, another Templar site was preserved: The Church of Santa Maria do Olival in the city of Tomar. Built during the 13th century, it was a Gothic stone church that became the spiritual center of all Portuguese churches built overseas leading some to declare it the “Vatican” of the Templars. This Portuguese National Monument was built to serve as the holy pantheon for the Order of the Knights Templar.
