Reports have been made that mining companies were being forced by drug gangs to make extortion payments in order to protect their safety. Drug cartel members have been known to steal raw materials and semi-refined metals. Mining companies have also had many organized crime truck robberies as well as employees threatened. Alfonso Durazo, the Public Safety Secretary, stated that the 118 newly graduates of the special guards training course “will help resolve the attacks by organized crime in this sector of the economy.” The guards will be equipped with assault rifles in order to protect the mines from the drug cartels.
