According to the American Psychological Association, trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event while PTSD is described as a severe response to trauma. Three of the areas impacted by trauma include the Amygdala, Hippocampus, and Pre-frontal cortex (PFC). From a study conducted in 23 male veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, some went for mindfulness-based exposure treatment and results show that they have experienced actual post-treatment brain changes that can help future studies understand how mindfulness could potentially help in the treatment of PTSD.
