He will now be recognized as the first living Medal of Honor recipient to be a Delta Force member. He is being recognized for his extreme bravery during a challenging mission to free hostages. His team planned weeks in advance for this mission however, nothing could prepare them for the challenges they faced. At one-point Payne sacrificed his life and put himself in harm’s way to be able to unlock the bottom lock while smoke was filling the air. Master Sgt. Josh Wheeler was killed during the mission after sacrificing his life for others.
