Mudlarks played an important role in studying London’s history where their passion is searching and finding treasures relevant from the past. As the tide drops in the muddy river of Thames, they would wade into the mud to grab significant objects that show clue of the rich history of Thames. Mudlarks get a license from the Port of London Authority and they must disclose to the Finds Liaison Officers if found to be historically significant. The name originates from referring to those up early to be “up with the larks.”
