Chen Kuo-ming, a military expert, assessed that Taiwan should strengthen its military defenses for East Taiwan. Aviation and Special Forces Command plans to use Taitung’s Feng Nien Airport as a helicopter training base, but it was criticized by local authorities for putting the plans for military defense in the east on hold. Threat from China’s amphibious capability continues to improve, and Chen advised that the army still needs to build a hangar and other helicopter hardware facilities. Though the possibility of the Chinese military landing in Eastern Taiwan is low, Chen recommends that the military encourage the local government and propose an alternative solution as they cannot underestimate the capabilities of the Chinese army to do so.
