Ronald Shurer was a former Green Beret and Medal of Honor recipient for his actions as a medic during the Battle of Shok Valley in Afghanistan. Shurer had been battling lung cancer and was set to be taken off his ventilator. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2018 for his actions as a Green Beret medic when he was with 3rd Special Forces Group. “Ron was the embodiment of the Special Forces soldier, a dedicated husband, and a loving father,” commented 3rd Group commander Col. Nathan Prussian. Shurer chose to enlist after the 9/11 attacks even though he was in the middle of pursuing a master’s degree.
