The shaky Taliban peace deal was welcomed by some, but many are still skeptical on its ability to keep the peace. However, two Americans are currently still missing in Afghanistan, allegedly being held by the Taliban. This author believes that the inability of the U.S. to retrieve these two men shows a weakened hold on the militants, and they are unable to bend them to their will anymore. American contractor and Navy veteran Mark Frerichs was kidnapped on January 31st, but President Trump signed the peace deal on February 29th anyway, without including him in the deal. While the deal called for a cease fire and that the U.S. would pull out of Afghanistan, there were no assurances made for military contractors, U.S. officials, or hostages currently being held.
