When many people think about animals in the military, usually a German Shepard or Belgian Malinois wearing a vest alongside an operator comes to mind. The Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Network Innovation and Experimentation has released a proposal that would focus on using dogs and birds to boost communications signals. These animals would have a small electronic device attached that would act as data links in order to rebroadcast communications. They would not be susceptible to certain issues that drones have, such as hacking, and are less conspicuous. The proposal also mentions that these animals would often be in less danger than many military dogs and the missions they participate in.
