The National Institutes of Health is using a “national Covid-19 testing challenge” that focuses companies on producing more coronavirus testing kits to help combat the shortage. Scientists and inventors developing coronavirus tests across the country get to compete for a share of a $500 million pool set aside for development. Those who are successful can then also be paired with manufacturers to generate more kits. Public health officials have stated recently that reopening society should only happen if we have enough testing kits to fully understand the impact the virus is having.
