The ability of the coronavirus to mutate is vastly underestimated. Over a 3-month period Lanjuan tested how efficiently 30 coronavirus strains, taken from 11 patients in Zhehang, could infect and kill humans. Lanjuan discovered that 19 strains mutated to overcome immune system resistance. Drug and vaccine development need to take the impact of those mutations into consideration in order to prevent pitfalls. Lanjuan, who is considered to be the country’s leading coronavirus expert, was a major influence in the government’s decision in January to lock down the city of Wuhan. Worldwide, more than 2.45 million people have been infected with coronavirus and more than 160,000 people have died from the deadly disease.
