The Congressional Medal of Honor Society has announced that Medal of Honor recipient Bennie G. Adkins has passed away at the age of 86 in Alabama. Adkins was drafted into the Army in 1956 where he then volunteered for the Special Forces in 1961. He completed three tours in Vietnam and served in the 7th, 3rd, 6th and 5th Special Forces. While during his second tour, Camp A Shau sustained an attack that lasted for 38 hours. Sergeant First Class Adkins worked to hold off the enemy and secure the base throughout the fight. When the base was overrun, he destroyed valuable evidence to keep it from falling into enemy hands, and then successfully led his group for 48 hours of evasion until they were rescued.
