While every country is being affected by the coronavirus and has subsequentially turned all their efforts inward, the Islamic State has been left to their own devices. Due to the pandemic, training, missions, and deployments have been suspended, leaving the terrorist group to build back up in Iraq. The Iraqi military is too distracted with their own people and disaster relief to worry about hunting down the militants. The Islamic State’s next moves are easy to predict. They will continue to build more terror cells and plot new attacks while everyone’s focus is elsewhere. We need to be prepared for what may happen in the Middle East once the virus has passed.
