The Families First Coronavirus Response Act has now been passed and began taking effect April 1st. The new law gives employees at certain companies up to 12 weeks of paid sick leave due to coronavirus illness. This applies to companies with a workforce of less than 500, but those with less than 50 can apply for an exemption. The leave can be taken if the employee is sick, caring for a family member with the virus, or has to isolate and is unable to work from home. Currently the law is active until December 31st, and more regulations will likely be passed in the coming weeks. Leave paychecks will be based on the past six pay periods, including overtime and tips, unless minimum wage is more than the combined total.
