A video from 2013 showed U.S. MD 500E helicopters flying behind Kim Jong-un during a celebration. This proved that the country still had 87 U.S.-built helicopters in their fleet that had been smuggled in over the years. The MD 500 was mainly used for evacuations, escorts, and scouting missions near enemy territory. Some wondered why North Korea would want civilian helicopters compared to their military counterpart, but their military has since refitted and added weapon attachments. It seems that they now use the helicopters as a means to infiltrate demilitarized areas after fitting them with the South Korean flag and markings.
