Defense Secretary Mark Esper has issued a memo stating that all service members need to start wearing a mask in public, but they will not be provided with any. They have been instructed to make or buy their own in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “Effective immediately, to the extent practical, all individuals on DoD property, installations, and facilities will wear cloth face coverings when they cannot maintain six feet of social distance in public areas or work centers,” said the statement. The memo also noted that exceptions can be made through one’s chain of command, and that masks may be lowered at security checkpoints. It was not clear in the memo if ski masks and bandanas meet the requirement, but clean t-shirts do.
