40,000 Kalashnikov AK-12 assault rifles will be distributed to infantry and reconnaissance units in the Russian armed forces in 2020. The rifles have three firing options with a single shot, three-shot, and automatic setting. Two special operations units have already received and used a similar model. A Russian Defense Ministry press office has commented that the rifle has increased capabilities and is more effective in combat situations compared to older models. Currently the Russian Defense Ministry is the only customer with the AK-12, and it is set to replace the AK-74M, as it is designed specifically for Russian troops. The AK-12 has spent the past three years completing operational testing as well as field and combat situation assessments.
