When someone is asked to picture the use of animals in the military, the image that comes to most people’s minds is a dog or horse. During the Cold War the CIA launched a $25 million project known as “Acoustic Kitty” where cats would be implemented with listening and recording devices and then sent to spy on the Soviets. Unfortunately, the first cat implemented with the device via surgery was run over by a car on its first test mission, putting an end to the project. In the 1960s the U.S. began using dolphins to detect mines, with dolphins still being more successful at this than any modern machine.
