BWX Technologies, Inc., Westinghouse Government Services, and X-energy, LLC have been awarded contracts by the Pentagon to take the first steps in building a mobile nuclear reactor. Totaling $39.7 million worth of contracts, Project Pele will run through the Strategic Capabilities Office and is looking for a prototype in the 1-5-megawatt (MWe) power range. The reactors should be mobile, stable, and have the ability to provide power for numerous types of military missions. The Project Pele program manager commented that the trick will be to have the reactor be extremely safe, as well as quick and easy to set up and take down.
