The recent memo that detailed numerous reforms to be explored in the Marine Corps was received with mixed reviews on many of the objectives. The banning of all Confederate flags on base was one the most hotly debated memo items. Commandant Gen. David Berger has stated that his reasoning for this is because Confederate flags causes distrust and divides units. “Things that divide us are not good. Whatever [Marines] have in their homes is fine. When on government property, we have to think as a unit and how to build a team, a cohesive team,” he commented. The Coast Guard is reportedly now considering a similar ban.
