Hisham Ashmawy was an Egyptian special forces officer before he became an extremist and participated in numerous terrorist attacks. He is accused of killing a total of 54 people since 2012 and participating in various attacks, including one in 2014 that resulted in the death of 22 military guards. Known as Egypt’s most wanted man, he was convicted in November on numerous charges, including leading the Ansar Beit al-Maqdis Islamist militant group. Ashmawy was hanged to the death on Wednesday in Cairo for his crimes.
