Barrett Firearms’ Multi-Role Adaptive Design (MRAD) bolt-action sniper rifle has been selected by SOCOM, as well as the Marine Corps and the Army, as the next sniper rifle. SOCOM has recently awarded Barrett with a $49.9 million contract for the adoption of the MRAD and conversion kits for the Advanced Sniper Rifle program. The Army and the Marines both included the MRAD in their fiscal year 2021 budget requests to become their primary sniper rifle. Both branches have also said that the new weapon is more effective, has an extended range, and is lighter than the current models being used.
