Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland’s Medina Training Annex is where airmen begin special tactics training. It has been announced that the base will be renamed as Chapman Training Annex in honor of Master Sgt. John A. Chapman. Chapman was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in March 2002 during the Battle of Takur Ghar in Afghanistan where he gave his life. He was a technical sergeant with the 24th Special Tactics Squadron and working with a SEAL team to rescue a soldier who had fallen out of a helicopter after coming under enemy fire. Drone footage later revealed that Chapman had been left as dead, when in fact he was only unconscious, when the SEAL team he was with was extracted. After coming to and wounded, Chapman was alone but fought to the death.
