Numerous presidents have conducted visits to India with varying results. As President Trump conducts his first official visit, BBC has compiled a list of previous visits and how well they went. Dwight D Eisenhower was the first U.S. president to visit India, where he received a warm welcome that encouraged likability during the Cold War. Richard Nixon, however, led a poor visit, and it was later detailed that he had referred to Gandhi as “an old witch.” Some people have called George W Bush the best U.S. president that India has ever met, with his visit resulting in the signing of a nuclear deal. Will President Trump’s visit follow suit of the last few president’s visits and remain a positive one?
