Alexander Mendoza was in El Progreso for his trial hearing when heavily armed men broke into the court building. The attack left four officers dead and at least three wounded. At least 20 gunmen were involved in the operation, and one was killed during the attack. Several minutes after the militants were seen entering the building, Mendoza was seen uncuffed and carrying a machine gun alongside the fighters, where a fight ensued. The last seen footage shows Mendoza and 11 men escaping into vehicles and leaving the scene. President Juan Orlando Hernández has offered a reward of 2 million lempiras ($80,000) for information that leads to his capture.
