House passes bill to get therapy dogs for veterans with PTSD | Washington Examiner

Must Read

The Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers for Veterans Therapy Act has been passed by the House and will see the VA award grants to organizations that pair therapy dogs with veterans. The lead bill sponsor, Republican Ohio Rep. Steve Stivers, when discussing the importance of the bill commented, “a soldier under my command during Operation Iraqi Freedom recently told me what his service dog means to him: he was able to fly on a plane for the first time in 10 years and he took his fiancée to dinner.” Currently the task of finding and paying for a therapy or service dog falls solely on the veteran. Numerous veterans have said that a therapy dog has reduced their need for medication or eradicated the need all together.
