Thousands of Iraqis in Baghdad have come together to protest the presence of U.S. troops and other foreign influences. Unrest has continued to rise in the Middle East following the U.S. drone strike that killed General Qassem Soleimani in Iraq. On January 5th the Iraqi Parliament called for the removal of all foreign troops from their country. The calls for this movement have yet to slow down with the new protests taking effect. A local protestor commented that “the US is the reason for the corruption and all of our misfortunes.” They have also commented that the U.S. presence causes unrest and stokes the flames on local rivalries. On Wednesday, President Trump and Iraqi President Barham Saleh met in Switzerland where they agreed that the U.S. troops in Iraq were necessary.
