Brexit: UK to quit EU at 23:00 GMT, as PM promises ‘new dawn’ | BBC

Must Read

Ending 47 years of membership, the UK officially left the European Union at 23:00 GMT. Brexit will be called a “new dawn,” according to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who led the 2016 campaign to leave. During the transition period, little changes will be made immediately. Most EU laws, such as the free movement of people, will still be enforced until the end of December. By that time, the UK hopes to be in a permanent free trade agreement with the EU. Jeremy Corbyn, Labour leader, said that it was necessary to maintain good relations with the EU and not fall into a free trade deal with the U.S. Former Prime Minister David Cameron led the campaign to remain in the EU during the referendum, but commented on the current matter; he believes the UK could “make a success of the choice that we made.”

Originally scheduled for 29 March of 2019, Brexit was repeatedly delayed when MPs rejected a previous withdrawal agreement that was reached by former Prime Minister Theresa May and the EU. When Prime Minister Johnson won December’s election, he pledged to “get Brexit done.”
