Captured by U.S. Special Forces in Libya, Mustafa al-Imam was involved in the planning and coordination of the Benghazi attacks in 2012. He was also in contact with Ahmed Abu Khattala during the attack, another Libyan national who was captured by U.S. forces and sentenced to 22 years in prison in 2018. Imam has been found guilty over terrorism charges and is sentenced to 19 years in prison. US attorney Jessie Liu has commented that “Imam played an important role in the terrorist attack that destroyed the US mission and the CIA annex in Benghazi.” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also mentioned how the sentencing and justice sends a message to those who would consider engaging in such a crime.
