South Korea will expand the reach of their Cheonghae Unit that is currently conducting anti-pirating operations off the coast of Somalia. A month after Tokyo announced they would be sending a destroyer and aircraft to the Gulf, Seoul announced the deployment of a destroyer and a Lynx helicopter to the Strait of Hormuz. The destroyer will not officially join the U.S. naval union in the area and is believed to be carrying special operation soldiers. The Defense Ministry has yet to release when the unit will move their ship to the area. Officials and military officers have commented that South Korea had to make a move following Japan in order to remain even-handed with the U.S.
