On January 15th, President Putin announced major constitutional alterations during his national annual speech that were unknown to Prime Minister Medvedev. Some of these amendments included new term limits for the president, more authority granted to the parliament, and new power for the State Council. This resulted in the Prime Minister resigning. According to the new term limits, Putin would be out of office in 2024. Despite his new reforms putting him out of office sooner than some expected, Putin would keep a firm hand on the wheel through his political party, United Russia, with the State Council’s newfound power.
