MLK Day 2020: What to know about the civil rights icon’s legacy | ABC News

Must Read

Recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. Day yesterday, people all around the nation come together to celebrate what would have been King’s 91st birthday month and the legacy of change that is still relevant today. Bernice King, the daughter of King, announced the theme for the holiday at the King Center in Atlanta. The theme is “King 2020 Vision — The Beloved Community: the Fierce Urgency of Now,” and it derives from his book in 1967, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community. Bernice King, along with Andrew Young, former mayor of Atlanta and ambassador to the United Nations, earnestly encouraged people to embrace King’s teachings. It is fitting that this is the theme this year. Bernice King said, “the world is in desperate need to follow his example,” as she notes the gun-violence epidemic, the tensions with Iran and the crisis in Washington that led to the impeachment of the president. “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted by the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late.”
